How Long to Ice Bath: My 3-Year Cold Plunge Protocol

6 steps 2 to 15 minutes, 3 to 4 times a week

Three years in, cold water taught me one thing: I run my state, the cold doesn't. Done right, you walk out calmer, sharper, and steadier, with less soreness and a dopamine lift that holds for hours. Here's the exact protocol I run.

  1. Earn it with cold showers first
    Step 01 / 6

Earn it with cold showers first

If you've never done this, start with a week or two of cold showers (60 to 70F) before you build the tub. They're a real stimulus, just weaker, and they build the nerve. Skip the temptation to jump straight to a freezing plunge on day one. The biggest beginner mistake is too cold, too long, too soon. This is an on-ramp, not the destination, so treat the first weeks as practice and let the habit set before you raise the stakes.
